Sometimes, it is fun to accentuate those “imperfections” for effect. The quirks that come from lifting and transferring by hand the delicate emulsion add texture and character. Though the original photographs are digital, applying the emulsion lift process makes every print unique. Essentially, you soak a completely dry photo (one that has set for at least 24 hours) in hot water and carefully peel the emulsion layer from the photo backing. In this process, the thin photographic skin created in a Polaroid photo is separated from its acrylic backing and transferred onto another medium – for these images I used watercolour paper. There’s a technique called the Polaroid emulsion lift that allows you to transfer a Polaroid print to different materials, such as glass, rock, or watercolor paper. I took the photos on an iPhone and printed them on Polaroid film, which I then used to create emulsion lifts. Purposely pursuing images both inside and out led to some pleasing echoes and juxtapositions, which I have tried to explore in this exhibition. As soon as I get film for my new Polaroid camera, Id love to play around with this process. She specializes in 'lifts', where a Polaroid has been soaked in hot water until the top emulsion layer floats off the backing. Gently push the emulsion with your fingers until it lifts off the backing. Im completely captivated by these dreamy nature images by Corinne Heraud. Transfer the print with tongs into the tray of cold water. Place a sheet of clear acetate in a tray of cold water. That period of enforced confinement made many of us slow down and look more closely at our immediate surroundings – while also taking greater notice than ever of the outdoor world. The Emulsion should start to lift off on its own in about 3 to 5 minutes. Most of the photographs in this series were taken between spring 2020 and spring 2021.
